A Connection Could Take You Anywhere

You never know where a connection might take you. Our connections between faculty, students and alumni run deep; University of Southern Maine (USM) is everywhere you need it to be.

English Language Bridge program

Undergraduate students who meet the entry requirements for admission to USM, but do not have the minimum English language requirement can apply through the English Language Bridge (ELB) program.

The ELB program is an academic support program offered through the University of Southern Maine's English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Department. Students in the ELB program are non-native English speakers who have met USM's admission requirements except that their TOEFL or SAT scores fall below the required level.

  • All ELB students meet with an academic advisor to select courses which offer key elements to aid in their academic success
  • Students in the ELB program take both ESOL and regular classes during their first semester or year at University
  • Students may declare their choice of degree program once they have achieved English proficiency
  • All classes taken by ELB students are credit-bearing. Students take up to 12-13 credits.
